In 2019 the theme of the composition competition is "Taking Flight". This commemorates the centenary of a great air race from Great Britain to Australia in 1919. Six teams started the race from London but only two teams finished. The winners were brothers Ross and Keith Smith who made the trip in 28 days.
Composers are invited to take inspiration from the idea of "Taking Flight" as part of the 2019 Festival which has the theme of "Expanding Horizons".
The set instrumentation for this year's competition is for one of the low flutes, alto or bass with piano.
