Michael Cox Australian Tour

Michael Cox Australian Tour by lyndie on Mar 11 2010

Michael Cox, Principal Flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, toured Australia in February/March 2010. As we anticipated, everyone was very excited about his classes and recitals.

Here is some of the feedback we received:

Yesterday afternoon I attended the Sydney Flute masterclass given by visiting English flautist, Michael Cox. Michael was really interesting, intelligent, musical and inspiring. He is clearly a marvellous player & teacher who is passionate about not only the flute, but also about expressing life through music.

Presented by Flutes and Flutists, it was held at Chatswood High Hall, which has excellent acoustics. It was encouraging to see the turn out around one hundred in the audience, including Janet Webb, Libby Pring, and many others. I hope that we can continue to support these events, they are invaluable. I applaud David and Lyndie Leviston for their tireless commitment to better flute playing and a better flute community in Australia..

Jane Rutter

Once again thank you for the wonderful masterclass that you organised with Michael Cox in Canberra. It was very informative and motivational for my playing. As a 2nd year part time BMus, UNE external student it was great to see a hands on masterclass and I gained much information from it.

Best Regards
Karen Brown

I was an auditor at the masterclass yesterday, and thought it was just brilliant! I was so glad I could make it!

Regards,
Morgan Harrowsmith

Just a quick note to thank you so much for organising the Michael Cox class, and especially for including Canberra on the itinerary. It was a fabulous class and all my students, and myself were absolutely inspired. We felt very lucky to be able to hear such world class playing and teaching in our own city.

With many thanks and lots of appreciation again.

Best wishes
Teresa Rabe

We will definitely be bringing Michael back to Australia in the future!

A message from the Artistic Director

I would like to personally thank all who attended the recent Australian Flute Festival. As a staff member of the University of Adelaide, it was a privilege to have you visit the Elder Conservatorium of Music, and to experience the amazing talent of all of the festival players, teachers and presenters. Jean Ferrandis, Tara-Helen O’Connor and Uwe Grodd have since written very warm and positive comments about their time spent in Adelaide, saying how congenial and generous everyone was during the weekend. I think this is what I noticed the most – a real generosity of spirit from everyone there. I have had so many emails remarking on how inspired people feel and how wonderful it was to feast on so much music and so many new ideas. Thank you to everyone involved, including David and Lyndie, all the guests, all the attendees and my lovely, helpful students.

Elizabeth Koch OAM
Artistic Director, Australian Flute Festival 2009

Here are some quotes from people who attended the Festival

'Congratulations for creating such a vibrant and successful flute festival yet again! We all had a great time and it was especially amazing to hear Jean Ferrandis, Uwe Grodd and Tara-Helen O'Connor. What phenomenal performers!

Shaun Barlow'

'I wanted to express our gratitude for all the work you put into the festival. It was fantastic that such a wonderful festival can happen in Australia. Danica attended the Junior program. The program was designed with all levels in mind and they all had a wonderful time. I am very impressed with Peter who kept the kids all focused during the whole time. He made it a fun time for all the kids.
I would like you to express my thanks to Peter for his inspirational program. We will be looking for more programs in the future.

Thanks again for a well run festival.

Warmest wishes
Amanda Just and Danica Edgar'

'I'm sure this would be one of many emails following the fantastic week end.
Something for absolutely every one!!!!!!!!!!!
Although my lips have never touched a flute it was very informative- the BEST talk on rhetoric that I have ever heard ie. not the least off putting and the visuals were very entertaining and grabbed attention. I managed to tell her afterwards. Nothing more to say except
BRING ON THE NEXT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ruth Redfern'

If you have any photos that you would like to share with us, please email them to Lyndie or Elizabeth and/or put them up on the Australian Flute Festival facebook page.

The home straight

Just weeks away by lyndie on Aug 27 2009
The AFF committee have all recently returned from New York where they attended the National Flute Association Convention. Inspired and encouraged, they are flat out with the final preparations to ensure that our Festival in Adelaide is as exciting and runs as smoothly.

If you are registered for the Junior Programme, make sure you have filled out the Health Form and posted it to us.

We recently received an email from Tara-Helen O' Conner, one of our main International artists. We asked her who her favourite composer is, what her greatest achievement is and what the Santa Fe Chamber Festival was like.

'My favorite composer has to be JS BACH. His output is astounding and the harmonic and melodic interest always amazes me.

The greatest achievement for me is a more difficult thing to answer. I have been so fortunate in my life and career so far. I feel so lucky to be able to do what I do, on a daily basis. I feel like a caretaker, trying to nourish and grow, and to continually get better. My teacher, Samuel Baron, was always searching for ways to improve and imparted that gift to all of his students. I am fortunate to have many memorable experiences and I have been lucky to share the concert stage with many of todays greatest musicians and composers. It is something I never take for granted and the thing that I look forward to always!

The Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival was fantastic. It is one of the most beautiful places on earth. The altitude leaves much to be desired, in that there is significantly less air at 7500 feet above sea level, so you make some adjustments. It is such a privilege to be invited to play there and I am always so happy to be in that part of my country. I had the great pleasure of working with Australia's own Brett Dean in his solo work for flute Demons. (He is such a wonderful musician!) I also played Debussy's Chansons de Bilitis, Ransom Wilson's Carmen Fantasy, Piazzolla's History of the Tango with Harp, J S Bach's Brandenburg's 4th and 5th concerto as well as a number of Aria's for flute soprano and flute and Tenor, Prokofiev Sonata, Poulenc Sonata, Villa Lobos Bachianas Brasileiras No. 6, the Spohr Nonet, a Rossini Quartet, the Nielsen Woodwind Quintet and I premiered a new work with Native American Flutist R Carlos Nakai and 3 other wonderful wind players from the Santa Fe Opera.

I am very excited and looking forward to my first trip 'down under'! I am also really hoping to go to the ZOO after the festival and see animals that I have NEVER EVER seen in my life! I can't wait'!

We also had the opportunity to hear Jean Ferrandis at NFA and we can tell you - you are in for a REAL treat!!!

Looking forward to catching up with you all soon.

(To be read with a French accent)!

I 'm very excited about taking part in the next flute convention in adelaide simply because i love to meet new people and different artists, but you have to know, above all, it's the first time i come to your wonderful country. As i said to my dear friend elisabeth koch , i dreamt to visit australia a long time ago and trust me, during my too short stay i will try to see people city and country side as much as i can!

Thinking of taking part in the Junior Program?

'I arranged for my daughter and 3 of her friends from Mimosa Public School to attend the Sydney Flute Festival this year. All of them gained so much from your festival and I thank you all for your effort. My daughter was on the verge of giving up but your day turned that around and she is still loving her flute'.
Keryn Burns

With the festival just around the corner it's time to register and become a part of the exciting Junior Program. Full details are on the website but remember the program features two great performances; the Opening and Closing concerts. Other sessions will explore making weird and wonderful sounds on the flute, looking at some famous moments and people from the past 300 years and plenty of tips along the way. Tuning, breathing, posture and plenty of fun along the way. No doubt we'll be visited by some sensational overseas and local players plus feasting on Liz's Luscious Lamingtons. Beyond the Junior Program there's also the opportunity, with your parent/guardian, to attend other sessions from the Main Festival Program.
The junior players were enthusiastically received at the 2007 Sydney Festival so jump on board, sign up now and be a part the action.
Peter Bartels

The main Festival program is shaping up to include some fantastic repertoire! Works will include Feld Sonata, Richard Meale Sonata, Schocker Regrets and Resolutions and a new work by Piazzolla, Samuel Barber Adagio played by the Fisenden Flute Ensemble,Voice of the Whale by George Crumb, Vivaldi Trio Sonata for flute, bassoon and harpsichord, Schubert Variations, Beethoven 'Spring' Sonata, Widor Suite, Australian and world premieres and more..

If you are hoping to become an orchestral player in the future then please apply for the ASO Inside an Audition and the Inside a Flute Section. This experience will set you up for good preparation for professional orchestral auditions.

Go to the Registration page to complete your registration process.

If you have any difficulties with registration, please phone Lyndie at the AFF office (02) 8006 5345 and she will guide you through the process.

Parking
There is parking available in the underground carpark next to Bonython Hall. Ticket machines are located on both levels and the cost is $5.00 per day.

The committee will be attending the National Flute Association Convention in New York from 7-24 August where we will be listening to, meeting and inviting future Australian Flute Festival artists! It will be all systems go when we get back as we count down to October.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

AFF June 09 newsletter

Earlybird 1 Registration is now open until August 31 by lyndie on Jun 25 2009

3 Months to go till the Festival

Over 200 people registered so far

Most of you will have booked your flights and accommodation by now. For those of you who are still thinking about coming, here is what the artists themselves have to say -

Margaret Crawford - Professional Learning Day

‘I well remember the excitement in the air at the Teachers' Day at the
Melbourne Flute Festival in 2002 and the tremendous response from those who
attended the varied and fascinating classes and lectures especially geared
towards flute teaching, which were presented on the first day. Very much
part of the Festival this day gave a deeper focus to the whole event. I am
sure that the Professional Learning Day at the 2009 Australian Flute
Festival will provide the same experience and I cannot recommend highly
enough that anyone interested in teaching the flute should attend’.

Numbers registered for the Professional Learning Day so far, are close to 50. Margaret Crawford has just returned from a 2 week teaching stint at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. They were so impressed with her there, that 16 students from Hong Kong are now planning on attending the Festival. Margaret is a revered educator who has inspired and guided many Australian flutists over the last 50 years.

Bridget Douglas - Masterclass and Recital

"I am really looking forward to being a part of the 2009 Australian Flute
Festival - what a wonderful opportunity to hear the gorgeous flute playing
of Jean Ferrandis and Tara-Helen O'Connor as well being inspired by
colleagues closer to home in masterclasses and recitals. Living 'down-under'
you have to jump at these precious opportunities to get together and
celebrate all things flute".

Bridget Douglas is Principal Flute of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Sally Walker - Masterclass and Recital
Sally recently made the trip to Adelaide to rehearse with the other members of her ensemble - such is the commitment of our artists, 3 months out!

"I have just come back from a day trip to lovely Adelaide to have a
provisional rehearsal of Vivaldi's A minor Sonata RV 86  with Harpsichordist
(Glenys March) and Bassoonist (Mark Gaydon) which we will be performing at
the festival.  I was reminded of what a friendly atmosphere Adelaide has;
and flew in early especially to visit the ever-enticing Central markets
which I re-discovered like a homing pigeon.  I then did what any
self-respecting flute player would do: spent an exorbitant amount of money
on old french cheeses...!  I later placed a petit chevre on both of my
chamber musicians stands at the beginning of the rehearsal to bribe them
to agree with my tempi (MAY be a little on the brisk side.... so some
leverage was not in vain).  After the uplifting harmonies and some decidedly
dangerous technical passages, I flew back to Sydney with a heavier bag, a
smile and a promise to myself to leave my credit card at home when visiting
the markets during the Festival.  Should I be late for my recital, you shall
know where I will be."

Sally Walker is the Lecturer in Flute at Newcastle Conservatorium of Music.

AFF - Supersaver 2 Registration

Supersaver 2 is now open until 30 June by lyndie on Apr 21 2009
Registration is going well and it's looking like we are going to have a record turnout for the Festival this year - hardly surprising considering the calibre of our international guest artists, Jean Ferrandis (France), Uwe Grodd (New Zealand) and Helen O'Conner (New York).

A number of talented and inspiring Australian artists will be performing and running masterclasses and workshops. You can read about all our artists on the
Artists
page.

While we were in New Zealand over Easter, we were able to catch up with Professor Uwe Grodd and Melody Lin.

Uwe Grodd, who has recently released another CD - talked to us about his plans to perform the Telemann Fantaisies interspersed by modern pieces. He also talked about his recent trip to Europe and how he noticed a resurgence of Baroque music being played on the modern flute. Uwe shared the various performing and audition techniques he teaches his students, like running around the block, then playing the pianissimo bars of the piece, helping them to learn to control their breathing while experiencing an increased heart beat. Uwe will be sharing more of these performance preparation techniques with us at the Festival.

Melody Lin, whose Flute Ensemble won the competition in 2007, asked us to pass on to you, how much she benefitted by attending the Festival. It afforded her the opportunity to try out a variety of flutes at various trade stands (she bought a gold headjoint while she was there) as well as gaining invaluable experience from entering the competition.

Clear Music Australia has agreed to supply AFF with any competition music at a very reasonable price. Please contact them directly if you need to purchase any of the Flute, Piccolo or Young Artist Competition pieces.

Australian Flute Festival January 2009 newsletter

Counting down by lyndie on Jan 16 2009
The Australian Flute Festival is just 8 months away. We are aiming to have all the Festival details up on the website by the end of January allowing you plenty of time to save, register, book accommodation and flights and of course, to practice!

It is a great pleasure to announce that Margaret Crawford has agreed to be the Patron of the Australian Flute Festival. Adelaide-born, Margaret Crawford teaches at the Victorian College of the Arts and at the Music Faculty of Melbourne University and is Artist in Residence at the Australian National Academy of Music. To read more about Margaret’s career click Margaret Crawford

We noticed, in our 2007 survey, that many of you requested a Professional Learning Day, so we have allocated an entire day - Friday, October 2 - to Professional Development. Margaret Crawford will be running this programme and you can be sure that she will share years of teaching knowledge and experience. Please notice that the Professional Learning Day is pre-festival, so that you will not miss out on any of the masterclasses, workshops and recitals.

The competition rules and repertoire are now up on the website. The competitions will be run slightly differently this year. There will be 2 rounds - the semi-final will be held on Friday October 2nd, 2009. Notice again, that the semi-final round will be held pre-festival, so you will need to book an extra night’s accommodation if you are traveling to Adelaide. To find out more click Competitions

Oliver Travel, Adelaide will be providing travel packages especially for AFF attendees, so be sure to contact them for the best deal in town. They have sought out all kinds of accommodation, to suit every budget and every taste ranging from student sharing to 5 star. We will be adding information about travel and accommodation to the Accommodation page soon.

Two of the workshops this year will be focusing on orchestral playing. We have seen many audition opportunities around the country in the past year. To help those of you who want to make playing your profession, Inside a Flute Audition will take you through the audition process. The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Flute section - Geoffrey Collins, Lisa Gill and Julia Grenfell, will hold a screened, mock flute audition. The audience will be able to observe the applicants and the panel. The applicants will receive verbal feedback from the section at the conclusion of the audition. As we rarely receive feedback after an audition, this is a fantastic opportunity to hear from the experts themselves, what they expect when listening to an audition.

Inside a Flute Section will give applicants an insight into how excerpts fit into the rest of the flute section. During the workshop each applicant will have the opportunity of playing selected excerpts with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra Symphony flute section. Click Orchestral Workshops for more details.

What's happening at the Australian Flute Festival

Australian Flute Festival update by Elizabeth Koch OAM on Nov 03 2008

In just under 11 months we hope to see you all in Adelaide at the 2009 Australian Flute Festival! We have secured Elder Hall and other venues on the University of Adelaide campus. And for those who haven’t been to Adelaide, the Elder Conservatorium of Music is beautifully situated on North Terrace and is next to the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Museum, and right in the city centre. There is a lot of accommodation in the vicinity and we will soon have some suggestions on the web for you.

Recently, I had the great opportunity of listening to the Jean Pierre Rampal International Flute Competition in Paris for two weeks. It was an amazing experience, with 74 candidates in the first round, 16 in the second round and then 4 finalists. It has caused me to rethink the running of the competitions for 2009 and the details for all the competitions will be up on the website very soon. In Paris it was wonderful to meet Michel Debost for the first time (I always look forward to his articles in the Flute Talk magazine) and to renew my friendships with Andras Adorjan, Sophie Cherrier and Philippe Bernold. It was lovely to meet up with Jean Ferrandis again who is one of AFF’s guests for 2009 and we discussed some great repertoire that he is preparing. He is a very approachable person, with a wonderfully positive and energetic personality. He can’t wait to set foot in Australia!

Please check out the website for next year! Included in the program will be a spotlight on the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra flute section, Geoffrey Collins, Lisa Gill and Julia Grenfell. They will run an orchestral audition and also an orchestral workshop. Applications for these special classes will require a letter of application, biography and curriculum vitae, as if you were applying for a professional flute orchestral position. Start practising your excerpts!

For those players who wish to improve their tonguing speeds, you can enter a tonguing competition and register your tempi for single, double and triple tonguing each day!

We are also delighted to have New Zealand flautists, Uwe Grodd and also Bridget Douglas from the NZSO. It would be wonderful to have a big New Zealand contingent coming to Adelaide! Neil Fisenden is bringing his newly formed Fisenden Flute Ensemble and this will be a very exciting addition to the festival program!

A Professional Development Day will be held on Friday October 2nd and I am delighted that Margaret Crawford has accepted an invitation to run some sessions.
The competitions will have semi-finals on Thursday October 1st Competition detail will be up on the website soon.

I think you will find Adelaide a beautiful city, easy to get around, reasonably priced accommodation, and if you check out flights soon, you will find very reasonable airfares.

Grants are available to assist young Australian flautists attend a Flute Festival or Flute Event during 2009. Please send a letter requesting financial assistance to David Cubbin Memorial Fund, C/- Robert Brown, PO Box 3228, Norwood, SA 5067 by Tuesday, June 2, 2009. Please include your contact information - postal address, telephone number, e-mail address. Applicants are required to provide a supporting letter from their teacher.

Please don’t hesitate to email Elizabeth, Lyndie or David, if you have any queries about anything to do with the festival.

The Australian Flute Festival

by lyndie on May 20 2008
You may think we've been quiet, but that doesn't mean we haven't been busy! Over the last few months we have been looking at how best to move forward with the Sydney Flute Festival. As we have had significant international interest in the festival we have decided to change the name of the Sydney Flute Festival, to the Australian Flute Festival. We then began to think about whether Sydney was in fact the most central city to host the Festival. After much deliberation, it was decided that the 2009 Australian Flute Festival would be held in Adelaide, at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide from Saturday 3rd - Monday 5th of October.

Next we set about inviting our International artists. We are very excited to have secured Jean Ferrandis from Paris, Tara O' Connor from New York and Uwe Grodd from New Zealand.

Liz met Jean in Paris in January and David and Lyndie heard him perform at NFA. You will find him a wonderful flautist and teacher. At the Ecole Normale Superieure de Paris, he teaches the art of living through music, as much as he does the subtleties of the flute. Jean performs regularly all around the world and is a prolific recording artist. Check out his website http://jean.ferrandis.free.fr It's well worth the visit!

Tara-Helen O'Connor lives in New York. She is a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, awarded to only a few woodwind players in it's 25 year history. Tara is flute soloist with the Bach Aria Group, performs with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Bargemusic and made her debut at the Mostly Mozart Festival in 1999. She records for Arcadia and Koch International and is Professor of Flute at the Purchase College Conservatory.

Many of you will know Uwe Grodd. He is New Zealand based but performs, teaches and conducts regularly internationally. Uwe is Associate Professor of Conducting and Flute at the University of Auckland.

Over the next few days we will be making some changes to the website. The url will change to www.australianflutefestival.com, but we will maintain a link from sydneyflutefestival.com.au to the new address.
We will post the list of Australian guests as they get confirmed and keep you updated on the Professional Development Day for teachers that we are planning.

We are hoping to get the repertoire for all the competitions up soon, so that you have ample time to study and practice the pieces, so be sure to visit the site regularly.

Looking to the Future

Looking to the Future by lyndie on Nov 08 2007

Since the Festival we have been in contact with many of you about how we can best move forward with the Festival in the future. We have had an overwhelmingly positive response from people who attended the Festival. We have spoken to students, teachers and tertiary educators and have carefully considered your suggestions and comments on the questionnaire that you completed.

'My most sincere thanks to you for your contributions on behalf of all of us. I left Sydney with utter respect for the flute community. The level of playing was fantastic! and the character of people unsurpassed. I am in awe of the other artists and feel so fortunate to have met and heard them. With a festival of this nature, the tone gets set from the organizers, and in this case, David, Lyndie and Liz, your generous hosting made for a warm and productive weekend. My heartfelt thanks for your dedication in furthering music and musicians in our world.

Until next time,
Marianne Gedigian
p.s.
When I returned home I discovered a 5 inch spider on the side of my home. All that worry in Australia...
p.p.s.
Peter and Juniors - I love vegemite, thank you!'

'I, the non-musician who attended, thoroughly enjoyed the festival as many of the teaching techniques I was able to observe from masterclasses have universal applicability in diverse fields. I was astonished at how much I could apply to my own field very successfully'.
Sophia Allani (Institute of Business and Technology and the School of Management at UniSA).

'Everyone that I spoke to said that they had had a brilliant time and were looking forward to the next one. One thing that I personally took away with me was the wonderfully warm and inviting environment that prevailed at the festival.....due mostly I believe to the very nature of the organising committee.....you were great'!
Michael Waye

'Congratulations on such a successful Festival!! I thought it was a fantastic weekend full of so many great things. It has definitely given me a shot in the arm and new inspiration... I even felt the difference when I was teaching today'!!
Julia Grenfell

'I was so enthused to be able to participate in a masterclass with Marianne Gedigian. Her energy and exuberance overwhelmed me with great excitement and inspiration for my flute playing. As a performer, her amazing ability and stamina kept me thinking about my future and what I can aspire to'.
Daniel Sakoulas

It has been decided to hold the Festival every 2 years. Here is why-
SFF is fast becoming an International event. Since the Festival, we have had significant international artists contacting us, asking us if they can be guest artists at the next Festival.
Most international flute competitions happen every 3-5 years. Our prizes are on a par with these competitions.
Many people felt they are more likely to attend the Festival every second year than every year.
Tertiary students would benefit from a two year preparation period for competitions.

In summary, the committee worked continuously throughout the past year and many of the systems are now in place. However, as numbers and our international profile grow, we feel that a 2 year lead up period would ensure that we bring you inspiring, worldclass musicians both from within and outside Australia.

To those of you who told us you couldn't wait to be back next year - hang in there and make sure we have your current email address. We have started negotiations with various international artists and SFF 2009 will be well worth the wait.

What a Festival it was!

by lyndie on Oct 09 2007

What a Festival it was! Three days of the very best! Thank you to all the artists and the awesome work of the accompanists for making this Festival such a huge success.

Thank you to everyone who has sent us emails - we appreciate your feedback. Here is what people are saying:

'.....heartiest congratulations on a superbly run festival. I told Marianne that her performance of the Franck was absolutely the best I had ever heard and Michael's encore, the 2nd movement of the B Minor Sonata (JSB) was so utterly sublime it will stay with me for ever. Great fun also to work with Virginia and Vernon. Alexa's soft top notes and mellow Bach with her wooden headjoint were to die for. I also loved her Zoom Tube.'
Alan Hardy

'Congratulations on such a successful Festival!! I thought it was a fantastic weekend full of so many great things. It has definitely given me a shot in the arm and new inspiration... I even felt the difference when I was teaching today'!!
Julia Grenfell

'I attended the flute festival over the long weekend and it was awesome. I must say you did an excellent job putting on the festival, I cant wait until next year'.
Andrew Gilholme

'Sydney Flute Festival was absolutely amazing! I never learnt so much about the Flute and repertoire, and techniques in such a short amount of time! It was thoroughly enjoyable, each and every minute of it! I hope to come again next year'!
Aaron Rothemund

'Thank you David for your vision, work and financial support in believing in the need for a Festival of this kind for the flute community.
Thank you Liz for your untiring enthusiasm and artistic excellence in choosing and coordinating the Festival.
Thank you Lyndie for all your hard work behind the scenes and upfront.
Thank you all 3 for your smiles and friendship throughout'.
Virginia and Vernon

'Everyone that I spoke to said that they had had a brilliant time and were looking forward to the next one. One thing that I personally took away with me was the wonderfully warm and inviting environment that prevailed at the festival.....due mostly I believe to the very nature of the organising committee.....you were great'!!!!!

Countdown

Countdown by elizabeth koch on Aug 02 2007

It's definitely countdown time with only 7 weeks to go to the Festival!!

Please note that registration for Competitions and Masterclasses is now closed.

Finalists will be notified by Friday August 31 2007.
Good luck to all those who are taking part in the competitions!

Interest in all events of the Festival, including the competitions and masterclasses has been very strong, so I encourage you all to register as soon as you can.

Lyndie Mostert, David Leviston, Peter Bartels and I have put together a program that you will find interesting, educational and fun. The repertoire that has been programmed throughout the Festival has a fantastic mix of traditional and new, for flute, piccolo, alto and bass flute. We will be in for some amazing performances from all artists and of course the series of French pieces at 2pm each day will be of interest to all players.

Peter Bartels' Junior Day looks very popular and whilst I can't say much about the junior participants' role in the Opening Concert (it is secret!), I think it will be enormous fun to be taking part. If you would like Junior Day brochures to hand out to your students, please contact Lyndie lyndie@leviston.net and she will post them to you.

Juniors need to download the health form at the bottom of the Programme page and post it to the above address.

For teachers, there are several sessions on flute pedagogy including Vernon Hill's two workshops on 'How to play brilliantly without really trying' and 'Bring the music alive, easily and naturally', and Alan Hardy's 'Colour, dynamics and intonation through melody - in the steps of Marcel Moyse'. I will demonstrate some unknown but interesting short works from the flute repertoire and will talk about embouchure in a workshop situation. So if you are an experienced teacher or you are just starting out, these sessions will be most helpful for your professional development.

We have organised a caterer to provide lunches each day from the bar inside the Con. Flora, from the STARBAR in Crows Nest will make her delicious Turkish toasted sandwiches at a very reasonable cost. A menu with prices will soon be up on the website.

Sydney Flute Festival Newsletter - June 2007

EARLYBIRD REGISTRATION CLOSES FRIDAY, AUGUST 31 by Elizabeth Koch on Jun 22 2007
I received this postcard from Marianne Gedigian recently - 'Just sending you energy, energy, energy for your current festival and all the work you are doing'. I spoke to Marianne at the University of Texas, only a few weeks ago and she sounds amazingly energetic, just like her postcard!

It has been exciting to see the large number of flautists who have already registered for the Sydney Flute Festival. The program is being refined on a daily basis and is on this website for you to study and to decide which sessions you wish to attend.

I am pleased to say that there will be a diverse selection of repertoire being played during the festival from solo bass flute works to chamber music with oboe, contemporary and traditional repertoire and hopefully a premiere or two! Selected SFF guests have each claimed ownership of one of the pieces from the 'Flute Music by French Composers' book and this album will be performed in it's entirety in a series of three concerts called 'Bon Appetit! A Feast of French Music.'

Recently, I travelled to Brisbane and Melbourne, and had a great time meeting with some wonderful flautists from those cities. The Sydney Flute Festival seems to be on everyone's lips with students preparing for the competitions and ensembles and groups preparing their competition repertoire. The prizes for these competitions are fantastic so it's not too late to think about entering!

To highlight a couple of interesting sessions, I would like to mention 'Colour, Dynamics and Intonation Through Melody - in the Steps of Marcel Moyse' to be presented by Alan Hardy and the workshops with Vernon Hill called 'Bring the music alive, easily and naturally. Make it appear easy' and 'How to play brilliantly without really trying'! I will definitely be attending that session to hear some good tips!

Peter Bartels is working some magic with his Junior Program for Saturday September 29th. It looks like a really fun and interesting day with additional events on the other two days of the festival and some concerts performances as well.

Remember, the EARLYBIRD RATE closes on FRIDAY, AUGUST 31.

Please email us if you have any questions - it has been great to hear from flautists all over the country and also from other parts of the world where the news has spread about our Sydney Flute Festival for 2007.

Sydney Flute Festival update

by Elizabeth Koch on May 09 2007

In the past few months the committee has been actively working to bring the SFF 2007 program together to present to you in late September. It has been a great privilege for me to liaise with the international and australian guests. I have found everyone to be so enthusiastic, supportive and eager to offer suggestions for recitals and masterclasses. Speaking with each guest and discussing repertoire, masterclasses and workshops has highlighted their generosity, their educational philosophies and their passion for sharing flute playing and methodologies with all of us flute players. Marianne Gedigian will devote one class to the Prokofiev Sonata, an orchestral class with a difference will be directed by Michael Cox, and pedagogy classes with Vernon Hill and Alan Hardy will be treasure chests of information for teachers and students alike. This is just a taste of what is included in the program!

I am meeting with Peter Bartels this weekend in Melbourne to add the finishing touches to what already looks like an exciting and adventurous junior program. By the look of the registrations, the program is appealing to many younger players so I encourage you to make the most of the Supersaver Registration (1 April - 30 June).

Carolyn Bounds is organising some great repertoire for you to perform in the SFF Flute Orchestra that will meet every day and perform at the Closing Concert. Dust off the piccolo, alto and bass flute for this occasion if you have one!

Check out the two new competitions in addition to the Flute, Flute Choir and Flute Ensemble. These are the Piccolo and the Young Artist (18 and under). All details for the competitions are on the web and we would love to hear you play so give it a go!

I will be in touch again soon with updates but visit the website regularly as there will be 'postcards' from our international guests Marianne Gedigian, Alexa Still and Michael Cox!

Just a reminder - the SUPERSAVER REGISTRATION is from now until June 30th.

Please don't hesitate to email either Lyndie Mosert (lyndie@leviston.net) or Elizabeth Koch (elizabeth.koch@adelaide.edu.au) with any questions. Printed brochures are now available so email if you would like any sent.

All the best,
Elizabeth Koch OAM
Artistic Director

Supersaver registration for the Sydney Flute Festival is now open!

Paul Edmund-Davies Australian Tour 2007 by lyndie on Mar 20 2007
Over 1000 students and teachers attended Paul Edmund-Davies masterclasses, recitals, teacher's forum and junior event around the country in March.

Attending the recital in Sydney, I was again made aware of how fortunate we are to have a musician of this calibre visiting Australia. It soon became apparent why Paul held the position of Principal Flutist with the London Symphony Orchestra for 20 years and why he continues to be in demand as a teacher all over the world.

Paul's enthusiasm for the flute is infectious - this, combined with a wonderful sense of humour enables him to reach students across a wide range of ages and ability. Here is what some people said:

"Thank you for a highly successful visit from Paul Edmund-Davies. Paul was one of the gang whether student, teacher or performer. My year 4 Scotch Boys were enthused. The teacher's forum covered a range of topics in effective detail. Congratulations also to Anne Rose for her cheerful organisation of Paul's Melbourne visit". Barbara Johnston

"Just to say thank you and let you know how much we enjoyed Paul's workshop and recital. What an amazing guy - humourous and extremely talented. We thoroughly enjoyed his performance". Anne Polden

"Eliza (student), Genevieve (teacher) and I (parent) attended the Melbourne events and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Paul is a wonderfully talented flautist and his accompanist Jamie Cock was amazing. Paul both entertained and informed his audience at all levels of knowledge and his repertoire was both challenging and accessible. We all left the recital exhilarated and exhausted after the Prokofiev work and the two encores.
Anne and her team at the venue were also marvellous".
Monique Shephard.

If you are in London and would like to have a lesson with Paul, you can contact him on +44 20 8248 1527 or email him at PEdmund_Davies@compuserve.com

Registration for the Festival 2007 is now open. Visit the Registration Page and check out the Supersaver prices!

We will be holding piccolo, open flute, young artist and ensemble competitions. Details about competition repertoire is now on the website. Artists and information about the programme are being posted daily, so be sure to visit the website regularly.

The 3 new Flute Fusions books - breakaway music - that Paul has been working on have already arrived. Paul will be using these books in the junior event. They are packed with new concepts and have a commentary by Paul, before each piece. I have had a sneak preview of the powerpoint presentation that Paul will be using in conjunction with these books. There are sonority exercises, articulation and double tonguing exercises and even a digit buster!! He has also included some favourites like Memories and The Swan. There will be plenty of hands-on playing at this event. Paul is held in such high regard that many teachers are making attendance to all of his classes compulsory!

You will be able to view the Flute Fusions series at the events and order forms will be available to order these and other of Paul's music and CD's.

All 30 masterclass participants have been selected around the country. It is encouraging to see talented young students taking the opportunity to play for Paul and learn from his wealth of knowledge and experience.

I have received emails with requests for the Teacher's Forum. The idea of this class is to bring your questions to the class, where you will be able discuss different approaches with Paul and other teachers. Some of the topics that have been put forward are correct breathing techniques, developing good breath control and tone in young beginner students. You can be sure he will have fun breathing exercises for young students to practice.

For those of you who have already registered online, you should have received a receipt by email. We will not be issuing tickets for Paul's events. Your name will be ticked off a list at the event.

If you haven't registered yet, registration can be done the following ways:

online now

print a registration form from this website and post it to 47 Hume Street, Crows Nest, NSW, 2065

fax (02) 9438 1063

Lastly, our brand new baby grand piano has arrived in the shop! We are planning regular masterclasses, workshops and concerts throughout the year.

We look forward to seeing you sometime in the next two weeks.

Sydney Flute Festival Newsletter - December 2006

Merry Christmas from Sydney Flute Festival by Elizabeth Koch OAM on Dec 15 2006
Welcome to the beautiful new website of the Sydney Flute Festival. As you will see, we have invited two fantastic international guests in Michael Cox and Marianne Gedigian. Whilst I have not heard Marianne ‘live’, I have wonderful accounts of her playing at the recent NFA Convention in Pittsburg 2006. In 2005 Michael Cox gave a most memorable day’s classes at the Royal Academy of Music, London, for some of my University students. The day concluded with Michael and accompanist Leigh Harrold presenting a stunning recital for us. To hear both of these artists will be something not to be missed by flute players of all levels.

I am also delighted to have as a guest artist Alexa Still who has an amazing reputation both as an international artist and an organiser of major events such as the Las Vegas NFA Convention and the 2006 Sydney Flute Festival. There will also be many Australian artists, and lots of new faces including young players at the start of the their career.

One of my priorities for the 2007 festival will be to ensure that there are playing opportunities for all participants. For example the Junior program will be directed by Peter Bartels from Melbourne. Peter has a reputation for inspiring young players and providing new and innovative ideas. There will be more to report from Peter in the New Year, however be assured that the junior program will be fun and full of surprises!

There will be flute ensemble activities for any player who wishes to play their flute at the festival!

For the aspiring orchestral players there will be classes on excerpts with the opportunity to play in a section with Michael Cox for instance. If you are a tertiary student or a player who is focussing on winning an orchestral job, these classes will be a must. There will also be opportunities for panel discussion on audition preparation.

I am presently securing all the masterclasses and organising the competitions. In 2007 there will also be a Piccolo Competition!

In the New Year there will be more details for you to see on the website. In the meantime I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year and happy practising for the Sydney Flute Festival 2007!

All the best,

Elizabeth Koch OAM

Sydney Flute Festival Newsletter - November 2006

by lyndie on Nov 15 2006
Dear Flute lover

It's been almost 4 months since the Sydney Flute Festival. In that time, we have been hard at work plotting and planning next year's Festival.

Thank you for your response to our survey about the best time to hold the Festival. We had an overwhelming response for the Festival to be held annually, in July. Unfortunately, this is not possible for 2007, but we are working hard to secure a July date for the future.

Sydney Flute Festival 2007 will be held at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, from Saturday, September 29 - Monday, October 1, 2007. We are delighted that Elizabeth Koch has accepted the position of Artistic Director. Elizabeth is the Head of Woodwind Studies at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide. She brings a wealth of experience as performer, having performed as soloist with several Australian orchestras, and finely tuned organisational skills, having toured the UK and Paris with her students, organising masterclasses with the likes of Michael Cox, Susan Milan, Paul Edmund-Davies and Felix Renggli. She will run State Music Camp for the ninth time next year!

Flutist Marianne Gedigian, Associate Professor of Flute at the University of Texas at Austin, will be one of our international artists at the 2007 Festival. Marianne was invited to perform at this year's NFA convention in Pittsburgh. We heard her perform the Khachaturian Concerto on her platinum Powell flute and were so impressed, that we immediately approached her about attending our Festival. Her command of the instrument is something to behold! She was able to project and soar above the large orchestra, even in the lowest register, delivering one of the most faultless, proficient, musical performances I have yet experienced. She is definitely not to be missed!

It is with great excitement that we are able to inform you that Michael Cox will be the other international guest at SFF 2007. Michael has played with all of England's major orchestras and now juggles the principal positions in four orchestras - the B.B.C. Symphony Orchestra, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the London Mozart Players, and the Britten Sinfonia. Michael Cox also performs in the Albion Quintet and Haffner Winds, as well as in regular recitals and concerts throughout Europe. He teaches at the Royal Academy of Music and is a consultant at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester.

It is also our pleasure to announce, as a result of numerous requests, that Paul Edmund-Davies will be touring Australia again in March 2007. He will give recitals, masterclasses, teacher forums and a junior event in Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney. Please visit our website for details. We have an online booking facility, with a free video download - Paul recently performed in some of the best acoustic recital halls in Osaka, Japan and you can download Paul playing the Dutilleux Sonatine when you register online, for any of his events.

Our website sydneyflutefestival.com.au has had a facelift. Please visit it and let us know what does and doesn't work for you. We would also appreciate your suggestions and ideas for future Festivals. Your feedback is vitally important.
