SYDNEY

Holding a Master of Music degree from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Melissa is co-artistic director of Sirius Chamber Ensemble and keen solo recitalist. Melissa has performed with Pacific Opera, Blush Opera, Sydney International Orchestra, Sydney Chamber Orchestra, the NSW Police Band and Singing Bird Productions.

ADELAIDE

Coruscalia Collective, Adelaide’s new flute ensemble, brings 21st-century music and works by Australian composers into interesting spaces and informal venues. The collective made its debut at the 2023 Adelaide Fringe Festival with a program of new and recent Australian music, and is collaborating with several Adelaide-based composers on upcoming projects.

MELBOURNE

Margaret Crawford has taught flute at the Canberra School of Music, the Sydney Conservatorium, the Queensland Conservatorium, the Melbourne University Conservatorium, the Victorian College of the Arts and the Australian National Academy of Music. Margaret is the beloved patron of the Australian Flute Festival.

PERTH

Principal Piccolo with WASO since 2024, Sonia Croucher previously enjoyed 21 years as Principal Piccolo of the Malaysian Philharmonic where she also mentored its Youth Orchestra. Her distinguished international career includes performances with orchestras in Canada, Norway, Hong Kong, NZ and across Australia, alongside her dedication to teaching excellence at UWA.

SYDNEY

Jocelyn Fazzone has a busy and varied musical career. She teaches flute at the Sydney Conservatorium, has a large private studio and has won 18 teaching awards from the AMEB for achieving the best student results in exams. Jocelyn was the syllabus consultant for the AMEB Series 4 grade books and is the AMEB Woodwind Chief examiner and Federal examiner. She performs with the Windfall sextet and has played in the TSO, QSO, SSO and AOBO orchestras. She also works as associate artist on piano with some of Sydney’s leading flutists, has recorded and published a large number of books and CDs for flute in her role as a partner of Fluteworthy.  

MELBOURNE

Ralema Fairhead is a Papua New Guinean, Australian woman. Being self taught in the mechanics of the flute from 2014, Ralema started off in school bands, going on to tertiary studies before graduating with a Bachelor in Music from Monash Universities, Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music in 2024.

SYDNEY

James Fortune is a Sydney-based flute and piccolo freelance player. He plays for Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia Orchestra and the Philharmonia Choirs as well as various chamber music formations. He rounds out his profile as an active musician with teaching (both in schools and privately), examining for AMEB, tutoring chamber music at the Sydney Conservatorium high school and examining and teaching in the Rising Stars program

ADELAIDE

Julia has been Principal Piccolo of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra since 2001, and has played as acting Principal Flute on regular occasions with the ASO since then. Her primary teachers have been Leone Buyse and Walfrid Kujala, from her years of postgraduate study in the USA. She has held positions with the NZSO and San Antonio Symphony previously, and did a year in the Gothenburg Opera Orchestra in Sweden. Julia is an active teacher in Adelaide and performed her published piccolo trio Piccolo Ridicolo in Chicago at the NFA Convention in 2022.

MELBOURNE - COLLABORATIVE ARTIST

Leigh Harrold’s international reputation as an associate artist has led to collaborations with such luminaries as Thomas Reibl, lecturer in viola at the Salzburg Mozarteum; Michael Cox, principal flautist with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and London flautist Wissam Boustany. Leigh holds positions on the Faculties of ANAM and the University of Melbourne, and is pianist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

SYDNEY

Jonathan Henderson held the position of Principal Flute with the Estonian National Opera Orchestra 2012 and 2019. He has performed as guest principal flute in Finland with the Tampere and Turku Philharmonic Orchestras and in Australia with the Opera Australia Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Adelaide and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras.

CANBERRA

Maria studied flute in Colombia, France, Belgium and the USA. In 2023 she moved to Australia, where she has performed with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra.

She has performed with orchestras in Australia, Europe, South America and the USA. She was previously Principal Piccolo of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra from 2019-2023. Maria received the second prize in the Australian Flute Festival Piccolo Competition in 2023.

GERMANY

Latham Horn is an Australian based in Passau, Germany and performs as soloist, chamber and orchestral musician on modern and historical flutes. Since 2017 he is working full-time as Flutist and Archivist of the Kurorchester Bad Füssing, performs regularly with the Niederbayrishe Landestheater and undertakes Postgraduate Traverso studies at the Munich Musikhochschule.

He has performed, among others, with Bach-Orchester München, Bachorchester Fürstenfeldbruck, Bach Akademie Stuttgart, Akademie Versailles and Barockorchester Rosenheim.

SYDNEY

Ewa Kowalski studied the flute at the Karol Lipiński Conservatorium of Music in Wroclaw, Poland, where she earned her Master of Music in Performance degree. Ewa is a founding member of the Hourglass Ensemble, with which she has performed extensively both nationally and internationally. She was a guest artist at the Australian Flute Festivals in 2019 and 2023 and also served as an adjudicator at the Young Artist Competition during the 2023 Festival.

USA

American flutist, Dr. Lindsay Leach Sparks teaches for Rutgers University, and is co-founder of Sparks Creative Inc. She is piccolo with the Augusta Symphony in Georgia. Her degrees are from the Peabody Conservatory, Royal Academy of Music, and Cincinnati College-Conservatory. She is a registered yoga instructor and certified health coach.

BRISBANE

Dr Karen Anne Lonsdale is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, music educator, and researcher. She has adjudicated music competitions in Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore, most recently for the 9th Singapore Raffles International Music Festival’s Virtual Music Competition. She is also an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board.

MELBOURNE

Andrew Macleod joined the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra as Principal Piccolo in 2003. He has performed with various international and Australian orchestras and premiered Paul Stanhope’s Piccolo Concerto, nominated for an ARIA. Andrew teaches at The University of Melbourne and ANAM, is Co-Director of The Complete Flute, and a Yamaha Artist. Andrew is a Yamaha Artist and plays a Yamaha YFL- 877 Custom Handmade Flute.

MELBOURNE

Simone holds a BMus in Advanced Flute Performance from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and an MPhil in Music Studies (Music Performance) from the University of Cambridge (UK), where she also had flute lessons with Michael Cox at the Royal Academy of Music in London. As an interdisciplinary researcher in the fields of flute performance, music psychology, and movement analysis, Simone regularly gives presentations at prestigious conferences.

BRISBANE

Tim is Associate Professor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. He was the flautist and co-Artistic Director of Eighth Blackbird from 2006-2015. He toured the US and internationally, premiering more than 100 works and winning three Grammy Awards.

SYDNEY

Lamorna is a freelance flautist, concert presenter, educator and publisher who is passionate about the future of art music in Australia. She has many years experience working in the orchestral sector and is a core member of the new music group, Ensemble Offspring. Lamorna has created several recordings of new Australian flute music with repertoire selected to suit student flute players and several pedagogical volumes of repertoire for young flute players through Fluteworthy. 

SYDNEY

Karen is a music teacher, mentor and book author. She is passionate about bringing music into the lives of children and adults and has enjoyed working in music education for the past 40 years.

In 2023 Karen is publishing another collection of new works by living composers for Flute & Piano, bringing the total number of her commissions to over 50 pieces added to contemporary repertoire for flute.

USA

Troy Paolantonio, 45, flutist in the US Army Field Band, holds a Doctorate in Flute Performance from the Catholic University of America, Masters from University of South Florida, and degrees from The Florida State University. He performs with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony, and was a flutist in the inaugural International Pride Orchestra in 2023.

Recordings include “Dialogues and Exhanges” with Laurel Zucker, and on the groundbreaking fife album with William White “Throw Another Fife on the Fire.”

MELBOURNE - JUNIOR DAY

Nathalie is a Melbourne-based flutist and teacher, specializing in teaching in the Suzuki Approach with young children. She holds an AMusA, LMusA, and BMus (Hons) from the University of Melbourne under the tutelage of Alan Hardy, and later trained in the USA and Japan. Known for her joyful approach, she has been teaching in schools and her own studio since 2001 and she performed in Eliza’s ‘March of the Women: Connecting Australia’ project in 2024,

SYDNEY - COLLABORATIVE ARTIST

Anna Rutkowska-Schock is a member of The Hourglass Ensemble with which she has extensively performed in Europe and Australia. She is a professor of chamber music at the K. Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław, Poland, and a committee member of the Puerto Rico Center for Collaborative Piano. She has given several solo and chamber performances on five continents.

SYDNEY

1st Prize Winner of the 2023 NFA Flute Competition, Sydney-based David Silva has rapidly established his career after completing his studies at Haute École de Musique de Genève (Switzerland) and at Royal Conservatory of Brussels (Belgium). Other accomplishments include the 1st prize at the Estoril Interpretation Competition, 4th prize at Tampere Flute Fest Competition and the 3rd prize at the Dutch International Flute Competition. David won the 2023 Australian Flute Festival Open Competition.

PERTH

Joanna is a great advocate of personal development. She completed a Masters of Music in order to create strategies for helping students of all levels to improve and develop their skills. It became increasingly obvious that establishing good habits in beginner flute players was of paramount importance. Her aim is to continue to find more effective and resourceful ways to help students to achieve their objectives.

GERMANY

Marion Treupel-Franck specialized in traverso after studying flute in Salzburg, Innsbruck, and Vienna, training with Barthold Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. She performs internationally with renowned Baroque ensembles and appears as a soloist at prestigious early music festivals. Her recordings are featured on labels such as Sony Music, Pan Classics, Ramée, and Ars Produktion. A dedicated educator, she teaches at the music universities in Munich and Regensburg and was appointed Honorary Professor at HMTM in 2024.
